Words & Hearts

Psalm 19:14 · Big point: what fills the heart comes out the mouth. Rhythms are how we tend what fills it.

Parent prep, sometime today

5 min, solo

Read Psalm 19:14. After eleven verses about skies and scriptures, David ends the psalm as a prayer about his own mouth and heart, because that is where all of it was headed. Camp is over now; this kit exists for exactly this moment: the ordinary week, where the rhythm either takes root or fades. Tonight is not a performance. It is rep number one at home.

Lower the bar on purpose: fifteen minutes, at the table, dishes still there. The win is that it happened, not that it soared.
1

Open: one-word check-in

3 min

Around the table: everyone gives one word for the best part of today and one word for the hardest. No follow-up questions allowed on the first pass; the point is that every voice gets heard before any voice gets fixed.

2

Read the verse

2 min

“May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

Psalm 19:14

Echo it phrase by phrase, everyone together: touch your lips for "words of my mouth," hand on chest for "meditation of my heart," fists together for "my Rock," hands open for "my Redeemer."

3

Talk about it, by age

5–6 min
Ages 3–5
  • What are happy words? What are hurting words? Say one happy word to the person next to you right now.
  • God hears every word at this table. Does that make you want to say more happy ones?
Ages 6–9
  • "Meditation of my heart" means what you chew on inside, like gum you never spit out. What did you chew on today?
  • Can God hear words you never say out loud? Is that good news or scary news? Why can it be both?
Ages 10–12
  • Do group chats and game lobbies count as "words of my mouth"? What would change if 19:14 was the filter?
  • Which is harder to control: what you say, or what you keep thinking about? What actually helps?
Teens
  • David calls God "my Rock and my Redeemer" in the same breath: the one who keeps you steady AND the one who covers you when your words fail. Which one do you need more this week, honestly?
  • Your feed trains your meditation more than any sermon does. What is one input you would have to change for your heart's default chewing to change?

Do: write your family's version

4 min

Take the fridge card from your kit bag. Together, write your family's own one-line version of Psalm 19:14, in your words. ("God, make our words kind and our hearts full of you. You hold us up and you clean us up.") Everybody signs it, even the scribblers. It goes on the fridge tonight and stays there.

5

Memorize: the summit verse

3 min

Psalm 19:14 is the verse the whole camp said before Sunday lunch, and now it is the family's before-dinner verse for the next month. Run it once with motions, once in a whisper, once with eyes closed. First kid to catch a parent flubbing it gets dessert priority; enforcement is strict.

6

Bless: same as camp, forever

2 min

Hand on each kid, one sentence each, by name: something true you saw in them TODAY, not at camp. Then the line that ends every devo in this house from now on: "The Lord is our Rock and our Redeemer. Goodnight, [name]." Small words, said often, become load-bearing.

The next four weeks

1 page each

Your printed kit includes four one-page follow-on devos, same seven beats, one per week. Same table, same fifteen minutes:

Week 1: RestPsalm 46:10. Being still on purpose in a family calendar that hates stillness.
Week 2: ScreensPsalm 101:3. What we set before our eyes, and who decides.
Week 3: Words at HomeEphesians 4:29. Building-up words in the place where lazy words are easiest.
Week 4: Telling the StoryPsalm 78:4. Your family tells the next generation what God has done, starting with what He did at camp.
Badge unlocked: Rhythm Keepers. This one is earned at home, on an ordinary night, with nobody from camp watching. Which is exactly why it counts the most. Text a photo of your signed fridge card to your tribe leader and the badge comes to church with them Sunday.
